Medicare Special Enrollment Period
A Special Enrollment Period is for those that were not automatically enrolled and/or missed the Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) or General Enrollment Period (GEP) because they were covered by an employment-based group health plan. (Note: Cobra and retiree health plans are not considered employment-based group health plans.)
If this applies to you, you can enroll in Original Medicare (Part A & B) during the following periods:
- Anytime you’re still covered by your group health plan.
- During the eight months after your employment or group healthcare coverage ends.
